Visitor Visa Checklist

Documents Required for a Canada Visitor Visa Application

Planning to visit Canada for tourism, family, business, or a special event? A Canada Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV, allows foreign nationals from visa-required countries to travel to Canada for a temporary purpose.

A successful visitor visa application is not just about uploading documents. The application should clearly explain:

  • Your purpose of visit

  • Your financial ability to afford the trip

  • Your ties to your home country

  • Your intention to leave Canada at the end of your stay

  • Your overall credibility as a genuine temporary visitor

At Visa Vlogs, we help applicants prepare well-organized and properly documented visitor visa applications.

Canada Visitor Visa Checklist at a Glance

Before applying, you should generally prepare documents under the following categories:

  • Passport and identity documents

  • Purpose of visit documents

  • Financial documents

  • Employment or business documents

  • Family ties documents

  • Property and asset documents

  • Travel history documents

  • Invitation letter (if applicable)

  • Accommodation details

  • Return Plan

  • Cover Letter / Submission Letter

  • Additional documents for minors (if applicable)

Each applicant’s situation is different. The exact documents required may depend on your country of residence, purpose of visit, family situation, employment, financial profile, and previous immigration history.

Passport and Identity Documents

Your passport is one of the most important documents in your visitor visa application.

Documents to include:

  • Valid passport bio page

  • Copies of stamped pages

  • Copies of previous visas

  • Copies of old passports, if they show travel history

  • National Identity Card (If applicable)

  • Digital photo as per application requirements

Important Tip: Your passport should ideally be valid for a reasonable period beyond your planned travel dates. If your passport is expiring soon, consider renewing it before applying, because visa validity cannot go beyond passport validity.

Purpose of Visit Documents

If you are visiting for tourism:

  • Travel itinerary

  • Family event details

  • Event date & location

  • Proof of relationship with the host

Invitation Letter from Canada

An invitation letter is useful when you are visiting family, friends, or attending a private event in Canada.

The invitation letter should include:

  • Full name of the inviter

  • Canadian address and contact details

  • Immigration status in Canada

  • Relationship with the applicant

  • Reason of invitation

  • Planned dates of visit

  • Accommodation details

  • Whether the inviter will provide financial support, accommodation or both

Supporting documents from the inviter may include:

  • Canadian passport / PR Card / Work Permit / Study Permit

  • Proof of address

  • Employment letter

  • Recent pay slips

  • Notice of Assessments (if available)

  • bank statements (If financial support is being provided)

Important Tip: An invitation letter alone does not guarantee approval. The applicant must still prove that they are a genuine temporary visitor and will leave Canada after the visit.

Financial Documents

Financial documents help show that you can afford your trip to Canada.

Documents to include:

  • Bank statements for the last 4 to 6 months

  • Savings account statement

  • Fixed deposits

  • Investment statements

  • Employment income proof

  • Salary slips

  • Income tax returns

  • Business income proof

  • Pension documents (If applicable)

  • Sponsorship support documents (if someone else is paying)

Important Tip: There is no fixed amount that works for every visitor visa application. The funds should be reasonable based on your length of stay, number of applicants, accommodation arrangement, travel plan, and personal situation.

Employment Documents

If you are employed, your employment documents can help show strong economic ties to your home country.

Documents to include:

  • Employment letter

  • Leave approval letter

  • Recent salary slips

  • Income tax documents

  • Employee Id card (If available)

  • Employment contract (If applicable)

Your employment letter should mention:

  • Your salary

  • Your joining date

  • Your employment status

  • Approved leave dates

  • Confirmation that you are expected to return to work after your trip

Business Documents

If you are self-employed or own a business, you should provide documents showing active business operations.

Documents to include:

Documents to include:

  • Marriage certificate

  • Birth certificates of children

  • Family registration certificate, if applicable

  • School records of children

  • Proof of dependent family members

  • Documents showing elderly parents or family responsibilities

  • Proof of shared residence with family

Travel history can help show that you have travelled internationally and followed immigration rules in other countries.

Documents to include:

  • Copies of previous visas

  • Entry and exit stamps

  • Old passports

  • Travel tickets, if available

  • Proof of previous travel to other countries

Important Tip: If you do not have travel history, it does not automatically mean refusal. In that case, your application should focus more strongly on purpose of visit, financial ability, employment, family ties, and return reasons.

Accommodation Documents

You should clearly explain where you will stay in Canada.

Documents to include:

  • Hotel booking, if staying at a hotel

  • Invitation letter, if staying with family or friends

  • Host’s address proof

  • Host’s lease or property document, if available

  • Explanation of accommodation arrangement

Important Tip: If you are staying with a host, clearly mention whether the host is only providing accommodation or also financial support.

Return Plan Documents

A visitor visa application must show that your stay in Canada is temporary.

Documents to include:

  • Return flight reservation, if available

  • Approved leave letter

  • Employment commitments

  • Business responsibilities

  • Family responsibilities

  • Children school commitments

  • Property responsibilities

  • Medical or caregiving responsibilities

  • Upcoming appointments or obligations

Important Tip: Your application should clearly answer this question: Why will you return after your visit to Canada?

Cover Letter or Submission Letter

A cover letter helps organize your application and explain your situation clearly to the visa officer.

Documents to include:

  • Who is applying

  • Why you want to visit Canada

  • Your planned travel dates

  • Who you are visiting (If applicable)

  • Where you will stay

  • Your travel history

  • Your reasons to return after the visit

  • Any previous refusals (if applicable)

Important Tip: The cover letter should be clear, honest, and consistent with the documents. Do not exaggerate facts or make unsupported claims.

Additional Documents for Minor Children

If a minor child is applying for a visitor visa, additional documents may be required.

Documents to include:

  • Child's passport

  • Birth certificate

  • School letter

  • Parent's identification documents

  • Consent letter from non-accompanying parent (If applicable)

  • Custody documents (if applicable)

  • Travel itenary

  • Proof of relationship with accompanying adult

Important Tip: If a child is travelling with one parent, without parents, or with another family member, the documentation should be prepared carefully.

Documents not in English or French

If your documents are not in English or French, they should be translated.

You may need:

  • Copy of the original document

  • Certified translation

  • translator affidavit (If applicable)

Important Tip: Untranslated or unclear documents can weaken your application. Make sure translations are complete and accurate.

Common Reasons for Canada Visitor Visa Refusal

Visitor visa applications are often refused when the officer is not satisfied that the applicant will leave Canada at the end of their stay.

Common refusal reasons include:

  • Unclear purpose of visit

  • Weak travel plan

  • Insufficient funds

  • Funds not properly explained

  • Weak employment or business ties

  • Weak family ties outside Canada

  • Strong family ties in Canada without enough return evidence

  • Overly long proposed stay

  • Poorly written invitation letter

  • Missing documents

  • Inconsistent information

  • Previous refusals not properly addressed

  • Generic cover letter

  • Unclear source of funds

Tips for a Strong Visitor Visa Application:

  • Prepare documents according to your personal situation

  • Keep your purpose of visit clear and realistic

  • Make sure your travel dates make sense

  • Do not propose an unnecessarily long stay

  • Explain your source of funds

  • Provide strong return reasons

  • Include proof of employment, business, family, and financial ties

  • Do not hide previous refusals

  • Do not submit false or misleading documents

  • Make your application easy for the officer to review

Your application should tell one clear story: You are a genuine temporary visitor, you can afford your trip, and you will leave Canada after your visit.
